Normanna Living

Normanna is a non-profit, 100 bed residential care facility located in Burnaby BC. Normanna is owned and operated by the Norwegian Old People’s Home Association. The volunteer Board of Directors takes great pride in the quality of care and services provided at Normanna. Our priority is to ensure Normanna, while being a complex residential care facility with a dementia care unit, is a home for its residents.

Normanna Living

Our History

1944

On May 4th a Meeting was held at First Norwegian Lutheran Church in Vancouver to discuss a home for seniors who were no longer able to keep house for themselves and Normanna was established. Draft constitution and by-laws for Association approved on May 29th. Declarants were Norwegians: some representing Sons of Norway and various churches.

1948

Site was purchased. The mansion had been built for James Brookes whose Brookes Woodworking Co. Ltd. on 6th and 12th Avenue was one of Burnaby’s first industries.

1949

Normanna opened in January 14th; official opening on July 18th.

1954

The first wing addition.

1959

The Centennial Wing addition

1970

The Anniversary Block addition.

1993

Minister of Health announced that 13 million dollars was allocated to Normanna to be rebuilt.

1999

Residents (77) were placed in the 4 new pods and construction of phase two started on September 7th.

2000

Dedication ceremony held on completion of phase two. Therapeutic garden began.

2007

Therapeutic garden began. Dedication of garden.

2009

Includes a number of Nordic features: Stabbur, gazebo with stave church roof, waterfall (fjord), Viking ship and a Ljoren (smokehouse). All features built by volunteers and donations. The Normanna site also includes the Shaw House (home to the first Mayor (Reeve) of Burnaby, which is a heritage house originally built in 1891. Normanna is home to 100 residents of all ethnic origins.
